Florida’s climate and natural terrain creates a fantastic opportunity to develop clean renewable energy. Probably one of the most obvious energy sources is spelled out in the state’s nickname “The Sunshine State”. Solar energy developments have excellent potential in Florida even at a private household level. Florida’s climate also bodes well for several fast-growing crops. Bio fuel research in Florida focuses on feed stocks such as sugarcane and sweet sorghum, and with more than 40,000 farms Florida could eventually be a strong player in this area as well.
There are also opportunities for wave energy developments, the Florida Straits Current and Gulf Stream Current located just a few miles offshore along the southern and eastern coastline hold the potential to invite development of near-shore tidal wave energy.
Florida has light winds, so wind energy developments are not as attractive as solar. However, as wind turbines technology advances, it might make sense for homeowners in Florida to install small wind turbines in windy areas.
With many investments in solar energy in Florida the state has a good chance to becoming a leader in developing clean, sustainable, renewable energy to provide electricity for its 19 million citizens.
